Ceramic coating marketing has gotten a little out of hand. Let us clear up the five myths we hear most often in the shop.
Myth #1: It makes paint scratch-proof
A coating adds meaningful scratch resistance, but nothing makes paint bulletproof. Ceramic coatings can help reduce the risk of light marring and surface damage, but they won’t prevent deep scratches, rock chips, or damage from improper washing.
Proper wash technique still matters.
Myth #2: You never wash again
You will wash far less often and far more easily — but maintenance washes keep the coating performing at its best.
Dirt, road grime, bird droppings, and environmental contaminants still accumulate on coated vehicles. Regular hand washing with a pH-neutral soap helps maintain the coating’s hydrophobic properties and keeps your paint looking its best.
Myth #3: Ceramic coating eliminates the need for paint correction
A ceramic coating is not a replacement for paint correction.
Coatings protect and enhance the condition of your paint at the time of application, but they don’t permanently remove swirl marks, scratches, oxidation, or existing imperfections.
The better the paint preparation, the better the finished result. That’s why proper paint correction and surface preparation are such important steps in the coating process.
Myth #4: Ceramic coating prevents rock chips and all paint damage
Ceramic coating offers protection against certain environmental contaminants and makes the surface easier to clean, but it is not the same as paint protection film (PPF).
Rock chips, deep scratches, and impact damage can still reach your paint. If you’re looking for protection against road debris and physical impacts, PPF is designed for that specific purpose.
Ceramic coating protects your paint’s surface. It isn’t body armor.
Myth #5: Any ceramic coating lasts forever, regardless of maintenance
Ceramic coatings are designed to last for a specific period of time, depending on the product, application, and maintenance.
A coating advertised as lasting 5 years doesn’t mean it will perform identically for five years without proper care. Harsh chemicals, improper washing, environmental exposure, and neglect can affect performance over time.
Following the manufacturer’s maintenance requirements and keeping up with recommended inspections or topcoats can help preserve the coating’s performance and warranty eligibility.
A long-lasting coating still needs proper care.
